The nephew of the former head of the Gulf Cartel was killed in Matamoros on Saturday, a state police source confirmed to The Monitor.

Enrique “Kike” Cardenas Salinas, the nephew of Osiel Cardenas Guillen who formerly led the notorious Gulf Cartel in Tamaulipas, was shot point-blank in Matamoros behind the installations of the federal commission of electricity building, according to the source.

The source, who has knowledge of the death, said it was an execution reportedly ordered by his cousin, Alfredo Cardenas. Both are nephews to Osiel Cardenas Guillen.

They are part of the Gulf Cartel faction operating in Matamoros. That area is divided into two groups, one who considers Alfredo Cardenas, the leader and the other follows orders from one known as “Vaquero,” according to the source.

In 2010, the notorious former head of the Gulf Cartel, Osiel Cardenas Guillen, was sentenced to serve 25 years in federal prison for his role in narcotics trafficking and his use of violence and intimidation.

He is serving his sentence in a federal supermax prison in Colorado.
