Pharr police arrest man accused of attempted break-in, lighting car on fire

Pharr police arrested a 26-year-old man Tuesday morning who they say tried to break into his ex-girlfriend’s house before returning hours later and setting her car on fire.

Orlando Goytia, a Pharr resident, is charged with burglary of a habitation with the intent to commit another felony and harassment.

Police responded to the woman’s home at 3:42 a.m. that day after she reported hearing noises outside her window before seeing that Goytia was outside holding a screwdriver, according to the affidavit, which states the man placed his arm through her window while holding the tool.

Goytia is accused of then going to her front door and though he forced it open, he was unable to make entry, police say.

He then walked toward the woman’s vehicle and broke its rear window with the screwdriver before leaving, according to the affidavit.

However, police say the man continued to harass the woman and hours later, at around 7 a.m., he returned to the residence, poured gasoline on her car and lit it on fire before leaving, authorities say.

Three hours later, at around 10 a.m., the woman said she received several voice recordings sent to her through a messaging app “saying he was going to hit her stomach until she lost the baby, as the defendant believed she was pregnant,” the affidavit stated.

Pharr police say they caught up with Goytia at the Sundeck Motel at 501 South Cage and arrested him.

He remains jailed on $105,000 in bonds, records show.
