Starr Co. reports high possibility for 2,000 more vaccine doses

Hopes are high that Starr County will receive another 2,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine next week as county officials continue their efforts to obtain enough doses to hold mass vaccination events for their residents.

Starr County Judge Eloy Vera announced in a Facebook post Thursday that there was a “high possibility” they would receive the 2,000 doses they had requested from the state.

Earlier this week, Starr County Memorial Hospital received 1,000 vaccine doses which are currently being administered to individuals who pre-registered with the county and who are eligible to receive the vaccine under state guidelines.

The hospital’s event is expected to last through Saturday, according to Dr. Jose Vazquez, the hospital board president.

Vazquez said that if the county was successful in securing those 2,000 additional doses, they would re-open registration.
