COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County jumped by 637 on Wednesday as nine additional deaths related to the virus were also reported by health officials.
Of the new cases, 483 were reported as confirmed, 145 as probable and nine as suspected.
The new data brings the total number of confirmed cases to 38,937, probable to 16,455 and suspected to 871.
So far, a total of 2,269 people in Hidalgo County have died of the virus.
Fatalities reported Wednesday were above 70, six of them men and three of them women.
Currently, 409 infected individuals are being treated for the virus in local hospitals, which continues an alarming trend in hospitalizations, and 145 are in intensive care units.
Willacy County recorded 12 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, raising its tally thus far to 1,736.
