Brownsville now included in flood advisory

The National Weather Service in Brownsville has extended the flood advisory it issued for parts of Hidalgo and Cameron counties.

Brownsville is now included in the updated advisory.

The advisory will now remain in effect until 5:30 p.m. It was initially to end at 2:30 p.m.

The NWS reports that at 2:24 p.m,. Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Up to 2 inches of rain have fallen.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Brownsville, Harlingen, Santa Rosa, La Feria McAllen, Edinburg, Elsa and Weslaco.

Additional rainfall of 1 inch is expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.

The NWS reports excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots

There’s a 60% chance of heavy rain today and a 30 % chance of thunderstorms tonight.
