Domestic dispute prompts lockdown

EDINBURG — A local high school was briefly on lockdown Monday morning while police responded to a domestic disturbance a little more than a mile from the campus.

Police were called to the 3200 block of Stuart Drive shortly before 8 a.m. after receiving reports of a dispute between a man and a woman, said Assistant Police Chief Orlando Garcia. Police subsequently received a call of shots fired as they were en route to the residence.

The man fled the scene and was apprehended shortly thereafter in the same subdivision, said Garcia, and no one was injured.

Robert Vela High School was on lockdown from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. as a precautionary measure, said Romeo Cantu, spokesman for Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District. Parents were notified of the lockdown, Cantu added.

The man is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, said Garcia, at which point his identity will be released. The charges against him will also be finalized Tuesday.
