Local film center, archive to observe Home Movie Day in McAllen

Do you have tapes or films that you’d like to get evaluated?

Well you’re in luck.

ENTRE Film Center and Regional Archive will be observing Home Movie Day on Saturday and is inviting the public to attend the free event at the McAllen Creative Incubator.

Home Movie Day is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking, with events held worldwide to provide the opportunity for people and families to watch and share their home movies with their community and see their neighbors’ in turn, according to the Center for Home Movies.

“It’s a chance to discover why to care about these films and to learn how best to care for them,” CHM writes on their site.

ENTRE members and volunteers will inspect and screen home movies brought to them by the community, the release stated.

They will be able to process VHS and miniDV tapes, as well as 16mm and 8mm films. The release also states that if you have media in other formats, especially Super8 and DV, then you are welcome to bring those to the event as well to be evaluated.

Throughout the day, ENTRE will be screening the home movies brought in by the community, noting that the maximum length for tape media is five minutes. They add in the release that this will coincide with HMD bingo.

Additionally, ENTRE will also provide resources on how to care for the home movies, where to have them transferred and provide information about how to become donors for their Rio Grande Valley home movie collection.

The release notes that donors retain ownership of their media, while exhibition/access details are discussed on a case-by-case basis.

The release also states that ENTRE is seeking photographs and home movies that feature Boca Chica Beach for their community archival project “Boca Chica, Corazón Grande”. The project is focused on collecting and documenting the history and geography of Boca Chica Beach.

The event will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. at the McAllen Creative Incubator, located at 601 M. Main St. on Saturday.
