The runoff elections for the cities of Mission and Palmview are fast approaching with early voting already underway.

Early voting began Tuesday for three races including the Mission mayoral race, the race for Mission city council place 1, and the Palmview mayoral race.

In the race for Mission mayor, current Mayor Armando O’Cana is running for a second term in office and being challenged by Norie Gonzalez Garza. Gonzalez Garza served on the city council for 15 years until resigning this year to run for mayor.

The two advanced to the runoff election from a field of four candidates that ran during the May 7 general election.

Gonzalez Garza received 2,786 votes, while O’Cana received 2,541 votes, according to an official canvass of the election.

In third was former Mission Mayor Norberto “Beto” Salinas, who received 2,114 votes. He was followed by Victor Anzaldua, a political science student, who received 154 votes.

Also running for reelection is Jessica Ortega, the Mission city councilmember for place 1 and life skills coach at Juarez-Lincoln High School. She is in a runoff against Moises “Moy” Iglesias, a retired military veteran.

Ortega received 3,142 votes during the general election, while Iglesias received 2,813 votes. In third place was Noel Salinas, a healthcare administrator, who received 1,367 votes.

Palmview voters will also be deciding on whether to keep their current mayor or elect a former council member to the position instead.

Former Palmview Councilmember Linda Sarabia is challenging current Mayor Rick Villarreal, who is seeking a second term in office.

During the general election, Villarreal received 767 votes, while Sarabia received 582 votes. A third candidate, Pamela Flores, received 250 votes.

The early voting period for those three races will run through June 7. Election day is June 11.
