Valley sales tax reimbursements sharply up

Sales tax reimbursements for February were some of the strongest year-over-year gains in the Rio Grande Valley recently, with nearly all Hidalgo County cities posting 20- to 30-percent gains over last year.

Statewide, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar announced he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $866.5 million in local sales tax allocations for April, 27.9 percent more than in April 2021.

The allocations are based on sales made in February by businesses that report tax monthly.

It was a bumper sales tax month for the Valley’s big cities, led by Hidalgo County.

Mercedes led the way with an increase of 33.02 percent over last year, followed by Mission (up 27.03 percent), Edinburg (up 24.03 percent), McAllen (up 22.87 percent), Pharr (up 22.09 percent) and Weslaco (up 19.05 percent).

In Cameron County, Brownsville recorded an increase of 30.07 percent year-over-year, followed by La Feria (up 15.64 percent), Harlingen (up 14.91 percent), South Padre Island (up 13.97 percent), Los Fresnos (up 13.93 percent), San Benito (up 12.51 percent) and Port Isabel (up 6.49 percent).
