Hidalgo County reports 11 more deaths, 284 new cases of COVID-19 

EDINBURG— Hidalgo County reported 11 deaths related to COVID-19 and 284 new cases of the virus Friday.

Those fatalities put the death toll for the county at 3,138.

Friday’s deaths ranged in age from their 50s to above 70, five of them women and six men. They lived in Donna, Edinburg, McAllen, Mission, Pharr and Weslaco.

Area hospitals continue to treat 391 patients with the coronavirus, 22 of them pediatric patients.

Of those individuals, 143 adults and 10 pediatric patients are in intensive care units.

The county reports the total number of COVID-19 positive school staff at 336 and the total number of students at 910.

Cameron County reported another 244 cases and one death Friday. A Brownsville woman in her 60s died as a result of the disease, raising the county’s death toll to 1,793, a Friday news release from the county said.

Forty of the new cases there were tied to shelters for unaccompanied minors and detention centers located in the county, officials said.
