Hidalgo County officials on Thursday reported 271 people tested positive for COVID-19, in addition to six deaths related to the virus.
Thursday’s deaths were individuals in their 40s, 50s, and 70 or older, increasing Hidalgo County’s death toll to 2,788, according to a release from the county.
Of the 271 new cases, the county’s Health and Human Services Department reported 159 are confirmed, 112 are probable and none are suspected.
The majority of individuals who tested positive Thursday were in the 0-19 years of age group, with 95 total cases. The next age group with the largest number of cases were adults in their 30s, with 45 cases.
Overall, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County is 85,899. Of that sum, 56,977 are confirmed, 27,403 are probable and 1,519 are suspected.
According to county officials, a total of 1,652 cases remain active.
Officials also reported a total of 106 individuals are hospitalized in county hospitals, with 44 patients in intensive care units.
Additionally, the county reported 224 individuals were released from isolation, raising that total to 81,459.
As of Thursday, a total of 449,639 tests had been administered in Hidalgo County, with 362,984 results returning negative.
In Cameron County, officials reported 63 people have tested positive for the virus on Thursday, according to a news release, raising the total number of positive cases there to 39,043.
Similar to Hidalgo County, the leading cases in Cameron County for Thursday were between the ages of 10 and 19, with 24 cases. The next age group with the largest number of cases were adults in their 30s, with 14 cases.
The county also reported four deaths related to the virus: a man in their 40s, two individuals in their 60s and one woman in their 70s — all from Brownsville.
Cameron County’s death toll is now at 1,592 as of Thursday.
Additionally, the county reported 80 individuals have recovered from COVID-19, raising the total number of those reported to have recovered there to 36,211.
