City kicks off holiday season today

The City of Brownsville kicks off the holidays today with its BTX Virtual Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

Washington Park, Dean Porter Park, Linear Park and Market Square will all be lit up with holiday lights and the parks will remain lighted until New Year’s Day. The event will also feature winter fireworks.

Everything will be live streamed on the park’s department Facebook Page.

The live streaming will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the fireworks will be featured at 6:15 p.m.

The city held the annual lighting at Washington Park every December, but the COVID-19 pandemic prompted officials to find another way to hold the annual ceremony, said Graciela L. Salazar, assistant director for the Parks and Recreation Department.

“The holiday might look a little bit different this year, but hopefully the community will still love what the park’s (department) have planned for everyone. We want everyone to experience a new tradition as we light up BTX through a virtual holiday lighting ceremony.”

Besides the lighting of the parks, there will be musical events, tips on how to make a Christmas tree ornament and the sharing of recipes to make treats to eat during the holidays.

“We are just trying to see what else we can do outside the box,” Salazar said.

Drone footage of the lighting of the parks will also be made available.

“We are hoping that it comes out perfect,” Salazar added.
