RAYMONDVILLE — Willacy County Judge Aurelio Guerra on Friday banned spectators from school activities as a result of an uptick in local COVID-19 cases, Raymondville Deputy Superintendent Ben Clinton said.
Guerra’s order comes after state health officials found 16 county residents had tested positive for the coronavirus amid an outbreak that’s led to about 20 positive test results at City Hall, county offices and within the Raymondville school district.
On Friday, state health officials found three more residents — a man 40 to 49 years old and two men 60 to 69 years old — had tested positive for COVID-19.
“All school-sponsored events and activities including but not limited to clubs, sports, fairs, exhibitions and academic or athletic competitions shall be allowed to take place with no spectators until further notice,” Guerra’s order states.
“Only persons who are necessary to conduct, officiate, participate or otherwise necessary for the event or activity to proceed will be allowed on the premises. School personnel and emergency personnel will be allowed if necessary.”
The order states “the ongoing evaluation of circumstances regarding the public health emergency related to COVID-19 now demonstrates a substantial and uncontrolled spread of the disease in the community.”
Now, the county’s total case count stands at 1,197.
