SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Along with individuals and businesses, annual events are also being impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
On Thursday, organizers announced the 39th annual Ladies Kingfish Tournament has been cancelled.
“While we had worked hard to adapt and adjust, and feel we had pulled together a tournament that followed CDC guidelines and all government mandates to ensure the safety of our staff, volunteers, anglers, captains and crew, circumstances beyond our control have led us to this decision,” marketing director Dianna L. Harvill stated in a press release.
The tournament was scheduled to be held on Aug. 7 through Aug. 9 with several changes, such as not allowing social or public gatherings.
The press release states with the continued increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths, it was decided that cancelling the tournament is in the best interest of everyone.
“Thank you to everyone that supported the tournament, and the many positive comments we received after announcing earlier this week we would hold the tournament with the necessary changes to meet all mandates,” Harvill stated. “Your support and encouraging words were greatly appreciated.”
All pre-registered participants will be refunded.
