Mission men face ammunition smuggling charges

A pair of Mission men who purchased thousands of rounds of ammunition face federal charges after allegedly attempting to smuggle the ammo into Mexico, court records show. Jorge Humberto Lopez Jr., 26, was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers attempting to enter Mexico on April 20 while carrying three 9mm ammunition magazines, the complaint against him states. Man who said he was ‘sorry’ after uncle’s death indicted for murder

A Hidalgo County grand jury on Wednesday indicted a man on a charge of murder Wednesday on accusations he stabbed his uncle three to four times in mid-March after an argument. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32-year-old Manuel Martinez III on March 18 on accusations he killed his uncle, 54-year-old Reynaldo Menchaca Villarreal, at a residence in Donna. Cameron County adds 9 new COVID-19 cases

Nine more cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Cameron County, officials there reported Friday. Of the nine new cases, four of the individuals are Brownsville residents while five are residents of Harlingen, according to a news release issued by the county. Their ages range between 30 and 93. Edinburg auto theft investigation leads to guns, drugs and money

When Edinburg investigators worked to determine who evaded arrest after leading them in a police chase in a stolen car on April 14, they ended up with more than just an auto theft case on their hands. Instead, the investigation lead to the arrest of three men and the seizure of four vehicles, nearly 400 pounds of marijuana, a half pound of cocaine, 26 weapons, including a .50 caliber Desert Eagle handgun, and more than $125,000 in cash. Mobile COVID-19 testing site coming to Mission

The Texas Department of Emergency Management will be locating a mobile COVID-19 testing site in Mission for one day only — Monday — for Rio Grande Valley residents who wish to get tested. The site will be located at Diaz Villarreal Elementary School, 5543 N. La Homa Road in Mission, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Testing will be conducted by appointment only.
