HARLINGEN — Parents picking up meals for their kids will soon be able to acquire several days’ worth of food in one trip.
Since the COVID-19 situation began, the Harlingen school district has continued to provide breakfast and lunch through its Good to Go program. Parents have been coming to 24 feeding sites for meals five days a week. However, beginning Tuesday, the district will offer meals at eight locations two days a week.
“Our HCISD families will receive multiple meals for the entire school week during the two-day distribution process,” said a statement from the district.
Next week, those feeding sites will be open Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm. Beginning April 20, those sites will be open Mondays and Wednesdays each week at the same time.
The district is making these changes to keep people safe, said Alicia Noyola, chief academic officer.
“One of the goals of our district is to provide meal services to our students through this crisis while still being mindful of the health and well-being of our students and our community,” Noyola said. “The consolidation of meal sites and days will ensure that we can accomplish that goal.”
Parents and guardians of any child 18 years old or younger may pick up the grab-and-go breakfast and lunch at any of the district’s eight distribution locations: Lamar and Treasure Hills elementaries; Memorial, Vernon, Vela and Gutierrez middle schools; Harlingen High School and Harlingen High School South.
These free meals are offered to all children.
Parents who bring their children to pick up meals will not need to bring documentation. If they do not bring their children, they will need either a letter from the district, a report card, a progress report, student ID or birth certificate.
“HCISD essential staff working to distribute the meals will be located in areas to ensure they practice social and physical distancing as recommended by the CDC,” read a statement from the district.
“Fever checks are conducted throughout the day to ensure that no essential staff member is displaying symptoms of illness,” it said.
All campuses and meal distributions will be closed in observance of the Easter holiday break Friday and Monday.
