HARLINGEN — Games and school supplies, not necessarily in that order.
That’s how a $500 grant from Ross Stores will be used by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harlingen, said Alma Dones, director of the Main Unit of the organization.
“This grant will definitely enhance the after school Power Hour program,” Dones said.
Representatives of several local Ross Stores spent the afternoon with the kids at the Main Unit while they participated in Power Hour. The event included a game focused on Black History Month, said Brittany Martinez, youth development coordinator.
“It was a match game,” Martinez said. “They had to match the names of activists, artists, actresses, actors, athletes and some poets.”
The kids had a paragraph of a noteworthy Black American and had to match that paragraph with the person. Clubs personnel helped those who had difficulty reading; once a child made the correct match they could stand and read the piece if they chose.
“We had a mini-break where they interacted with the people from Ross,” she said. “They had a bouncy house and a relay.”
That relay included a hula hoop, a basketball, and a potato sack race.
