HARLINGEN — The growling of bulldozers and scraping of twisted metal have disappeared from the corner lot on Harrison Ave. and 77 Sunshine Strip.
What was once a gas station and old school district structures, then an eyesore for passersby during the demolition, is now a lawn with fresh grass, new palm trees and a sprinkler system.
“That was part of the deal when they cleared it, to not leave it looking like a dump,” said Shane Strubhart, spokesperson for the Harlingen school district.
Along with the gas station, structures which once housed the school board meetings, special education departments and other offices were also removed.
The district hasn’t made specific plans for the site. However, administrators have previously said it would be a perfect location for additional parking space near Boggus Stadium. Funding is unavailable right now to erect new structures on the two sites. Those plans will be made later.
In the meantime, the lot on the corner has been converted into a grassy lawn.
