HARLINGEN — Hungry?
Get over to Lon C. Hill Park today.
They’ll be judging more than 20 entries of pan de campo, beans, fajitas, brisket and pork spare ribs for Que for Kids.
“We’re looking for judges,” said Jim Young, board member of the Harlingen Area Educational Foundation.
“The first turn in is at 9 a.m.,” said Young, referring to the entries.
The cook-off is sanctioned by the International Barbecue Cookers Association. Not only will teams be set up to prepare their entries, the public is invited to enjoy games, an obstacle course, face painting and other activities.
“We’ve partnered up with 20 or so student clubs from our high schools and they are providing festival booths whether it’s hot dogs, burgers …” Young said.
While HAEF will raise money for its programs, student clubs will be able to raise money for their organizations at their booths.
WHAT IS QUE FOR KIDS?
Que For Kids is being held to fund a variety of educational programs including mentorship programs and teacher innovation grants.
“There are two programs, New Directions and New Horizons,” said Jim Young, member of the board at HAEF.
“There are students who are deemed at risk,” he continued. “By at risk I mean not graduating for a number of reasons whether its socio economic issues, issues at home, learning challenges, what have you.”
Mentorship programs offer a variety of assistance such as help with homework and providing information about opportunities for employment and education.
The money will also be used to fund Teacher Innovation grants, Young said. Teachers and campus administrators in HCISD apply for these grants.
“These are programs that are not necessarily in the budget or in the curriculum but they represent a novel way for teachers and administrators to reach the kids,” Young said. “So the grants are applied for to HAEF.”
