STA hosts fun run fundraiser for HOSA competition

OLMITO — There’s a new kid in town.

She’s looking good, but she could use a little help getting started.

She’s the “Run For Your Life 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run” planned for Saturday at the South Texas Academy for Medical Professions. The run is a fundraiser for the school’s HOSA chapter.

The HOSA students are trying to raise money so they can participate in a state competition in April.

“We’ve got I would say a little over 100 runners so far,” said HOSA sponsor Jeanette Groves. “We were hoping to get 300, so we haven’t reached our goal.”

HOSA students previously have attended the state event in San Antonio, but this year it’s being held in Dallas, thus the extra expense. But it’s worth it.

“They have about 50 or 60 events,” she said.

Saturday’s walk and run will also feature a free health fair.

“We have about 40 health fair vendors that are going to be here,” Groves said. “They’re going to be offering free screenings — blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, BMI (body mass index). Local hospitals and different practitioners and things are going to be” available.

Everyone’s looking forward to the activities Saturday.

“It’s been a lot of work but the kids are really excited to have it here on campus because the campus is new,” she said. “We’re excited to have the public come out and take a look at what we have here to offer.”

HOSA’s goal is to encourage all health science instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership.

“HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions.”
