Run for the heroes

HARLINGEN — The name “Run for the Heroes” doesn’t really tell the whole story.

It’s more like a “Celebration of Heroes” and so far 200 people have signed up for the event Saturday organized by the Harlingen Police Department.

“It’s turning out to be a huge success,” said Harlingen Police Chief Jeffry Adickes.

The enthusiasm was clearly evident in his voice as he spoke of the 3rd Annual Run With The Heroes RGV 5K Run/Walk taking place Saturday. The run will begin at 8 a.m. at W. Jackson and S. A streets.

The event raises money for four charities.

“The Harlingen Humane Society is one of our charities,” Adickes said. “Since we’ve been blessed to miss out on Hurricane Harvey we’re reaching out to victims of Hurricane Harvey.”

Other charities being supported by the annual run are Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness and Special Olympics – Texas.

“The shirt is pink in support of breast cancer awareness,” Adickes said.

Participating runners will receive a medal showing the “thin blue line” and the Texas flag.
