Harlingen Medical Center and Texas State Technical College are teaming up to promote health and wellness and raise awareness of Celiac Disease – with the first HMC & TSTC Celiac Disease Awareness 5k Run/1m Walk.
The run/walk will be held this weekend Saturday, May 20 at the TSTC campus and is open to the public.
The goal is to let residents know the health-related risks linked to celiac disease, which is a genetic autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten leads to possible damage in the small intestine.
The hospital will provide complimentary basic medical screenings, health and wellness education, a Zumba-warm-up session prior to the run/walk, an education expo with demonstrations on healthy meal preparation, gluten-free food options, education on celiac disease, Doc Talk Lectures featuring expert presentations on healthy-living, fun activities for young children, and much more.
Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the fees range from $10 to $25. For more information call Harlingen Medical Center at (956) 365-1848.
