Two sides clash over grading method

HARLINGEN — The court of perception offers numerous approaches for putting an idea on trial.

However, trials can be riddled with volleys of innuendos, suspicions and misunderstandings.

Sometimes beyond the chaos of impulsive disagreement, however, there lies an issue in which both sides have solid merit. The justice of the issue is a matter of perception.

Such seems to be the case with the A-F rating system currently under development by the Texas Education Agency.

The four new performance indicators closely resemble the four indicators on the current accountability system.

They almost appear redundant, and that’s where some of the controversy arises. What’s the point in creating a new system which closely resembles the previous one?

It’s much more complicated than that.

Under the current system, those performance indicators are illustrated by a graph which shows the target score and then the score received by the district.
