A Weslaco man is set to be arraigned for the death of a 16-year-old male who had agreed to wear a bulletproof vest prior to being shot twice, according to court documents.

Arturo Ramos III, 18, is facing a manslaughter charge after allegedly shooting and killing Alexis Valenciano with a handgun on Jan. 11.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office initially posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, announcing the death of Valenciano after deputies arrived at the Valley Baptist Micro Hospital.

Deputies received preliminary information that the victim had shot himself while playing with a handgun at a residence in the 6400 block of FM 88 in rural Weslaco.

Witnesses told investigators that they were at a gathering at Ramos’ residence when they began mishandling a handgun.

Additionally, witnesses stated that Ramos had the victim try on a bulletproof vest so he could shoot him, to which Valenciano agreed, according to the initial news release.

Ramos shot Valenciano twice, once in the bulletproof vest and once in the chest.

He was booked into the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $125,000 bond and released the same day.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
