‘Excited to learn’ First day of school an adventure for kids

HARLINGEN — The young girl at Dr. Rodriguez Elementary gripped the yellow crayon and filled the space in the picture.

“I love coloring, and I like math and reading, and I want to be a millionaire this year,” said Avery Janssen, 7, joy and enthusiasm radiating from her face.

The “millionaire” comment referred to the Accelerated Reader Program in which students try to read a million words over the course of a school year.

Avery was one of about 800 children who filled the halls and classrooms at Dr. Rodriguez yesterday for the first day of school.

Cars jammed the roadways as parents sought to drop off their children on their first day back. But they weren’t just dropping them off. There seemed to be about as many parents as children filling the school — if not more.
