School redesign lets students ‘deep dive’ into career paths

HARLINGEN — Ultimately, the school district’s redesign will lead to the Academy system.

The media and arts communication programs already reflect some of those elements.

“That is made of giving kids exposure to a deep dive, and that means going deep into this curriculum of communication and media,” said Superintendent Art Cavazos.

The “deep dive” into the media arts and communication program gives students a broad range of experiences running an actual television station. This program will eventually be called the Media Arts and Communication Academy.

“In our television station, our kids do practicum courses, internships, they do those programs here at our central office because that’s where I have my television station,” Cavazos said. “And so these kids are getting real meaningful experiences, authentic learning. They are covering news information items at our elementary campuses, our middle school campuses.”

He said the news crew/students even have an assignment board like a real television station and they head out on assignments.

“They go, they take video footage, they come back, they do all the editing, just like in a TV station,” Cavazos said.
