LYFORD — Residents might be saving homeless pets soon.
The city’s moving forward with plans to adopt stray dogs and cats from its animal shelter.
City commissioners have already set adoption fees.
Soon, residents might be able to take home a dog for $35.
For $10, they could give a cat a new home.
But there’s more work ahead.
Pat Turman-White, president of the Harlingen Humane Society, said officials will have to comply with state law requiring the city to microchip and spay or neuter animals put up for adoption.
Adoptions will cut down on euthanizations.
Every week, the city keeps about 10 to 12 dogs and cats in its shelter.
Turman-White said the city holds dogs and cats for up to three days before euthanizing them.
