COVID-19 hospitalizations in Hidalgo County saw a decrease this week after having jumped by more than 24% last week.

After ending last week with 133 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, Hidalgo County reported 119 COVID hospitalizations as of Tuesday. That number went down even further with the latest figures showing 112 COVID hospitalizations as of Friday, a 15% drop in a week.

Those 112 patients include 104 adults and eight children. Of the adults, 18 of them were in intensive care units.

Throughout the entire Rio Grande Valley, hospitalizations were down overall at the beginning of the week too, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Because the state updates its data sets on Wednesdays, the latest hospitalization data is from Tuesday.

On Tuesday, there were a total of 155 patients hospitalized with COVID throughout the Valley. That number is up from a week prior when there were 150 patients hospitalized on Jan. 10 but is significantly lower from the peak of 175 patients reported on Friday, Jan. 13.

The 155 patients reported on Tuesday included 122 adults, 26 adults in the ICU, and seven children.

Also this week, Hidalgo County reported additional deaths due to COVID-19 — a Mission man and a Mission woman both over 70 years old.

The two residents were not up to date with their COVID vaccinations, the county said, and their deaths raise the county’s total to 4,068 since the start of the pandemic.

County health officials also reported 1,196 new cases this week including 406 confirmed and 790 probable cases.

There were 503 new cases in Cameron County this week including 154 confirmed and 349 probable cases.

There were no additional deaths reported this week, keeping their total number of COVID-related deaths to 2,320.
