Letters: Error noted

Futuro RGV appreciates the support for the candidate forums that we have hosted over the years. In the Sept. 22 editorial, “Let them speak,” there was one error we would like to have corrected.

The editorial stated, “Candidates in two other races had agreed to attend but the Republican Party candidates …, for Texas Senate District 20 and State Board of Education District 2, both called in sick at the last minute.”

Board of Education District 2 Republican candidate L.J. Francis did not call in sick and was ready to participate in the forum. It was the Democratic candidate for Board of Education District 2 who called in sick and the Republican candidate for Texas Senate District 20 who called in sick, as he contracted COVID.

Hearings

defended

I would like to comment on Jake Longoria’s letter about the Jan. 6 hearings (Aug. 26). First of all, the Democrats held the hearings because the Republicans refused to do so. Secondly, all of the people who testified were Republicans and included the former president’s daughter and son-in-law as well as several close associates of his who told him outright that he lost the election. Several of Trump’s closest allies who might have supported him were asked to testify, were even subpoenaed to testify, and they refused. William Barr did and he said he told Trump he lost.

I watched 90% of the hearings and there was absolutely no evidence given that Nancy Pelosi was asked to increase security. Pelosi has absolutely no power over the National Guard. However, Trump, who did, refused to call in the Guard as he watched the insurrection on TV.

As for the two Republicans who served on the committee, they never swore allegiance to Trump. They swore it to the U.S. Constitution and I commend them for the courage they showed in standing up to Trump. If only more Republican “leaders” had the guts to do so.

Mr. Longoria ends his letter speaking of the “prosperous” term in which Trump served. He forgets that it was the Obama/Biden administration that pulled this country out of the greatest recession since the Great Depression, handing a great economy to Trump on a silver platter when he entered office. Also, he ignores the fact that the inflation rate we are experiencing as well as the gas prices are being experienced by every nation in the world — it is due to the many effects of COVID! And yes, much of it is due to Vladimir Putin.

Spay/neuter

law wanted

Of course we have a huge problem with pet overpopulation here in Mission. It takes three months to get an appointment at the RGV spay/neuter clinic. By that time, the female is already pregnant.

Another other alternative is Dr. Amber Valinski at Texas Wellness on Ware Road. It’s a bit more expensive, but you can get in within a reasonable amount of time.

Going to a vet is too expensive for a lot of animal lovers with several pets. In order to stop the ever-growing problem of too many cats and dogs, we need a law requiring every animal to be spayed/neutered before it can be rehomed. Strays will continue to be a problem until the county steps up to increase the availability of affordable vet services. In the meantime, the city of Mission needs to improve the conditions and staffing at the Mission PAWS shelter.
