Police detained a juvenile after a lockdown at Sharyland High and Sharyland Central Administration Wednesday afternoon, a law enforcement spokesperson confirmed shortly before 3 p.m.
Mission Police Public Information Officer Art Flores said 30 to 40 officers responded after someone overheard the juvenile say something suspicious.
That juvenile ultimately proved to be unarmed.
“Basically this individual was kidding around, joking around,” Flores said. “But everybody’s safe and we’re good — and we’re going to take stuff like this seriously.”
Police responded to the school within one to two minutes, Flores said, including officers from Mission, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Hidalgo County constables.
Flores said that response included members of Mission PD’s tactical team. Photos from the campus show officers with long guns drawn in the building.
“We’d rather have rifles than later on be sorry with just our pistols,” Flores said.
The incident, Flores said, was over quickly and isolated.
The district noted in a message that updates on the lockdown would be provided through email and social media.
By 3:50 p.m., the lockdown had been lifted.
