BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Veterans Memorial’s Rebecca Rodriguez will continue her golf career at McLennan Community College in Waco.

“I feel so happy and blessed to have the opportunity to go,” Rodriguez said. “It is something that I have been working very hard for. Finally, being able to say that I am going to do it is surreal.”

McLennan, a two-year school, will offer Rodriguez the ability to take her golf game even further. McLennan has sent multiple women’s golfers to four-year schools around the country.

“I will definitely be transferring one day,” she said. “I do not know if it will be academically or in golf. McLennan is very well known for having golfers get other scholarships.”

Rodriguez had a fantastic season to close out her Chargers career. Rodriguez finished with an average round of 84, seventh-best in the Rio Grande Valley. The senior captured District 32-5A’s individual championship and helped her team win the district title.

“(Rodriguez) is definitely one of the hardest-working athletes that I have seen,” Brownsville Veterans golf coach Thomas Abete said. “She has grit, mental toughness and just an all-around athlete that every coach wishes they have on the team. She puts in the work and does not expect anything handed to her.”

Abete said the traits Rodriguez possessed were special for a high-schooler and thinks his now former co-captain will be successful in college.

“She is going to go out and do what she does best, be a competitor,” he said. “She is smart and will do great academically. She is going to do great.”

Rodriguez plans to study nursing, with hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner.

“I am so thankful that I was here at Veterans,” she said. “I got probably the best coach that I could ever ask for, the teammates here are so supportive and the environment was so nice and refreshing. I am so grateful that I spent my time playing high school golf at Veterans.”
