SAN BENITO — The coronavirus pandemic caused a temporary closure for this city’s library.
However, it is now open with limited services.
The City of San Benito announced on Monday that its Public Library was granted accreditation and is a fully qualified member of the Texas Library System for the upcoming year.
“ While this distinction is not new to the city library, it signifies its ongoing commitment to the community of San Benito, and ensures that it will continue to provide top-quality materials and educational resources for its visitors,” a press release from the city states.
Benefits of accreditation include — technology, access to statewide interlibrary loan, grant funding, continuing education, faster internet, Wi-Fi and a rich variety of literacy programs.
Additional benefits are E-Rate resources and TexShare Card programs.
The E-Rate program makes telecommunications and information services more affordable for schools and libraries.
With funding from the Universal Service Fund, the E-Rate program provides discounts for telecommunications, Internet access, and internal connections to eligible schools and libraries.
TexShare Card programs provide users with borrowing privileges from more than 500 participating libraries across the state.
Registered patrons of a participating library are able to request a TexShare Card from their home library.
According to Public Library Director and head librarian Gerardo Salazar, the distinction is something that every public library in Texas must apply for in order to gain accreditation.
He stated that the process involves the library director to work closely with city administration to assure that all minimum financial and programming requirements are met.
“This accreditation demonstrates that city leaders are committed to the educational services available for the community,” Salazar stated.
Library services include — issuing library cards and renewals, checking materials in and out, collection of library fines and PrinterOn services.
Library hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The library is closed on Sundays.
