Police said a man attempting to evade authorities was arrested Wednesday in north Brownsville after agents retraced the man’s path and discovered bundles of alleged cocaine scattered along the roadway.
According to a criminal complaint filed on Aug. 27, a Cameron County District Attorney’s Office-marked patrol unit initiated a probable cause traffic stop on a red Chevrolet Impala for failure to stop at a designated stop at approximately 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The driver, later identified as Edmundo Antonio Monroy, failed to yield and continued north on Frontage Road, a Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent wrote in an affidavit.
“ Monroy continued to evade police by driving in an unsafe manner. Monroy eventually stopped near Merryman Road under highway 77. A search of the vehicle resulted in negative findings for contraband,” the report stated.
A CCDA Officer detained Monroy and brought him to the DA’s office, the investigator wrote.
“ At this time, investigators believed Monroy may have thrown possible narcotics out of his window while Monroy was evading law enforcement. A search of the route traveled by Monroy resulted in the finding of five square bundles wrapped in tape weighing approximately 5.82 kilograms,” the document said.
One of the bundles field tested positive for the characteristics of cocaine, the affidavit stated.
The man allegedly agreed to speak with investigators without the presence of an attorney following the reading of his Miranda rights, telling officers that he picked up “trash from an unidentified female person at a Pollo Loco restaurant,” according to the document.
The complaint alleged that “Monroy stated he was going to bring what he described as trash to a person at the Sunrise Mall in Brownsville, TX. Monroy admitted to throwing the trash out of his car window while he was evading law enforcement.”
