Dunkin’ Donuts to close 800 locations in US

Dunkin’ will close 800 locations in the U.S. by the end of the year and another 350 worldwide.

The company says it is eliminating locations that are low-volume locations. It announced the changes in its second quarter earnings, released Thursday and said it is working with operators to close the locations.

Dunkin’ has a number of locations in the Valley, including Brownsville, McAllen and Edinburg.

According to RestaurantBusinessOnline.com , CEO Dave Hoffmann said the closures would be concentrated on “off-strategy locations” that typically have “low average weekly sales.”

“Since this management took over, we have been focused on quality over quantity,” Hoffmann said. He said that as the company looked at its future strategy, “these locations weren’t part of that future. They were unprofitable for franchisees. We felt like it was the right management move.”

The 800 closures in the U.S. represent 8% of the domestic store base, but just 2% of system sales.

Dunkin’ operates nearly 9,600 U.S. locations, and more than 13,000 globally. The company has not listed which locations will be closed.
