53 new COVID-19 deaths recorded in Valley

Hidalgo County confirmed 45 additional deaths due to COVID-19, along with 287 new cases of the disease on Wednesday in a county news release.

This brings the death toll to 576, and the total case count to 16,375.

The county also confirmed that 586 individuals were released from isolation due to the coronavirus on Wednesday, leaving 7,106 active cases there. The active cases make up for 43.4% of the total cases the count has seen; 53.1% of that number have been released.

Currently, there are 881 people fighting COVID-19 in local hospitals, of which 256 are being cared for in intensive care units. According to the county’s COVID-19 dashboard, there are 18 COVID-19 beds left.

So far, the county has administered 106,387 COVID-19 tests, of which, 15.4% have tested positive. There are currently 821 test results pending.

Edinburg is leading with the highest number of positive cases at 17.5%, while Donna has most of its population infected, at 5.9%.

Additionally, Cameron County reported on Wednesday eight additional COVID-19 related deaths, along with 647 new cases of the disease.

The death toll there and total case count there is now 200 and 9,424, respectively.

The youngest among the fatalities is a 42-year-old man from San Benito.

Also on Wednesday, Willacy County confirmed six new COVID-19 cases in a county news release, raising the total cases seen there to 577.
