Cameron County, area cities handing out sandbags

Cameron County officials will be handing out sandbags today in preparation of the arrival of Tropical Storm Hanna.

The sandbags are available at each county warehouse:

Pct. 1 Warehouse, 2050 S. Browne Ave, Brownsville
Pct. 2 Warehouse, 7092 Old Alice Road, Brownsville
Pct. 3 Warehouse, 26945 FM 510, San Benito
Pct. 4 Warehouse, 26623 White Ranch Road, La Feria

Residents can pick up the sandbags Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. There is a limit of six bags per household.

Brownsville

The City of Brownsville will hold a sandbag distribution for Brownsville residents on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon at the Events Center. The bags will be pre-filled and residents will be required to show proof of residency.

Harlingen

The City of Harlingen is making sandbags available to residents and businesses starting at 9 a.m.  Sandbags are available at the Public Works Facility located at 404 South 54th Street until 7 p.m.

The bags are already filled so residents will simply have to show their ID verifying their Harlingen address. They will also need a water bill showing they have garbage service with the City.

City employees will load the bags for them.  Residents will be allowed six bags and businesses 12.

San Benito

San Benito has now decided to hand out sandbags to area residents. They can be picked up at the City Service Center, 925 W. Stenger from 1 to 8 p.m. Each household is limited to five bags, businesses will receive 10 bags.

Must show proof of residency – drivers license, utility bill. Do not roll down the windows of your vehicle.

Willacy County

The Willacy County Navigation District has begun making sand bags and sand available on the North East end of their warehouses behind the church on Mansfield Drive.  These sandbags are being issued to local residents and property owners only.

South Padre Island

Sandbags are available at the Public Works Workshop located at the corner of West Venus and Laguna Boulevard. The bags and sand are provided for free, but residents and businesses will need to bring shovels and fill their own bags. Residents will be allowed five bags per property. Businesses will be allowed ten bags per property.

Port Isabel

Sandbags will be distributed from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Public Works Office located at 217 W. Hickman. Each household is allowed six bags. You must bring proof of residency (drivers license) to pickup your bags.

Laguna Vista

The City of Laguna Vista will be distributing sandbags to residents from 1 to 6 pm. at the vacant lot north of City Hall on Fernandez Street. Each household will be allowed up to six bags. A proof of residency is required.
