Police urge residents to beware of scammers

Brownsville police are warning residents to beware of scammers who are impersonating county judges and police officers threatening to arrest them if they don’t pay their fines.

According to Brownsville PD, the scammers are calling people via telephone, telling them they have warrants for their arrest and must pay the fines. The scammers are requesting credit card information and over the phone payment.

Authorities said Brownsville PD does not request any form of payment (credit cards or personal bank account information) relating to citations, arrest warrants, or any other fines via telephone.

The department said in case residents receive a related scam phone call in which scammers mention they are from the Brownsville Police Department or any other local government entity, “DO NOT provide any personal information or payment via telephone until you have contacted the appropriate government entity to report and validate the information.”
