SAN BENITO — From assorted fruits and veggies to hot meals, students will be able to continue receiving breakfast and lunch during these uncertain times caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
School districts such as San Benito CISD and Point Isabel ISD are making adjustments to their meal programs.
During the extended closure, San Benito CISD will continue providing breakfast and lunch to students.
However, meals will be distributed on Mondays and Wednesdays only.
Two days worth of meals will be given on Mondays and three days worth of meals will be given on Wednesdays.
This will apply to the delivery of meals via drive-thru at campuses from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., as well as meals distributed by school bus.
Additionally, parents are now able to pick up their children’s meals at home campuses without having to take their kids.
In order to do so, parents will need their ID and their students’ names.
For parents with children at multiple schools, all of the students will need to be present to pick up everyone’s meals at one school.
Parents that want to leave their children home would have to pick up meals at every campus with only their ID.
While picking up meals at bus stops, all students must still be present.
According to a statement made by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nate Carman, this is a very fluid situation.
“If the Texas Department of Agriculture alters requirements, we will communicate those changes and implement as quickly as possible,” the announcement states.
Children ages 18 and younger are eligible to receive the meals.
“As we make every effort to safeguard the integrity of our Child Nutrition Program’s alignment and adherence to the Texas Department of Agriculture’s guidelines, we appreciate your cooperation,” Carman stated.
Point Isabel ISD
The school district in the Laguna Madre area is following similar procedures.
The Point Isabel School District will only provide lunch bundles Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m at Garriga and Derry Elementary, as well as at the high school.
On Monday, meals for two days will be distributed. On Wednesday, meals will be distributed for the rest of the weekdays. Curbside meals are free for children ages one through 18.
Children do not need to attend the school district to receive a meal.
