HARLINGEN — City officials have closed public swimming pools while urging residents against going to parks in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
Officials have shut down swimming pools at Pendleton and Victor parks as well as the swimming pool and splash pad at Lon C. Hill Park, city spokeswoman Irma Garza said Wednesday.
“The city of Harlingen continues to monitor the coronavirus disease 2019 situation with Cameron County, state and federal health officials,” Garza stated in a press release. “As always, the safety and well-being of the community are of utmost importance to Harlingen city leaders.”
Meanwhile, officials are urging residents to stay out of public parks.
“We are recommending that they do not go to the parks if they don’t need to,” Garza said.
Garza said the recommendation stems from the new federal guideline restricting group sizes to no more than 10 to help reduce contact.
“Although no cases have been reported in the Rio Grande Valley, we continue to take proactive measures to help prevent the disease,” Garza stated.
Wednesday, officials announced the cancellation of downtown events including the March 21 and 28 walking tours, the March 27 art night, the April 2 morning coffee, the April 4 Market Days, the April 7 Downtown Improvement District board meeting and the postponement of the Classic Car Show.
