Dollar General weighs new store in northeast Harlingen

HARLINGEN — Dollar General is weighing construction of a new store in northeast Harlingen.

The discount retailer already has six stores within the city limits and this location would be on the northwest corner of Morgan Boulevard at Rio Hondo Road.

“We are currently in a due diligence phase for a new store in Harlingen, which means we’re interested in adding a new store, but have not committed to doing so quite yet,” said Dollar General spokesperson Crystal Ghassemi. “A final decision on this site is expected as early as mid-to-late summer 2020.”

If the company green-lights the project, the anticipated cost of raising a pre-manufactured metal building will be about $600,000 for what would be Store No. 21873. Total square footage of these stores is about 9,000 feet.

The intersection of Morgan Boulevard and Rio Hondo Road is yet to be developed, and the Dollar General would be the first commercial operation on any of the corners.

Dollar General stores usually employ six to 10 staffers, depending on the needs of individual stores, Ghassemi said.
