PORT ISABEL — Every year, water supply systems throughout the state are regulated and rated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
During a board meeting held Feb. 5, Laguna Madre Water District personnel announced they received a Superior Public Water System Rating from the TCEQ.
According to the TCEQ, the designation implies that the water system is exceeding the minimum acceptable standards for operating their water system and for the quality of the water.
To earn a superior rating, a system must meet and maintain a higher set of standards than are required of all public water systems.
“Superior” standards include — excelled efforts in water quality, treatment, protecting public health, ensuring reliable operations and water supply for the system’s customers, compliance with regulatory requirements and environmental stewardship.
“Most of our staff is local and takes great pride in working hard for our customers,” LMWD general manager Carlos Galvan stated in a press release. “We plan to do even better things in the future as our community continues to grow.”
State records indicate only 10 percent of community water systems in Texas achieved a “Superior” ranking in 2019, according to the LMWD press release.
“We are extremely proud of our staff,” LMWD Board Chairman Scott Friedman stated in a press release. “This recognition is a result of all the hard work our staff puts into delivering the highest quality water to our Laguna Madre Area.”
