Harlingen Happenings

With the start of the new year, many organizations and non-profit groups are resuming their regular meeting schedules. Listed below are some upcoming meetings and events you might want to add to your calendar:

January 9, 2020 – 7:30 p.m., The Harlingen Concert Association’s next show in its 2019-2020 Concert Series is the Scotland-based “The Maxwell Quartet.” This Glasgow based quartet broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio Scotland, performs at many festivals and venues across Europe with notable performances at London’s Wigmore Hall. Their program at the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium, 1204 Fair Park Blvd. will highlight selections by Beethoven, Hayden as well as original arrangements of Scottish folk music. January 11, 2020 – The Pan American Round Table of San Benito/Harlingen meets at 9:30 a.m. at the Harlingen Country Club. All women are invited to attend. For more information call 956-345-4756.

January 16, 2020 – The Tip O’ Texas Genealogical Society will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the Harlingen Public Library, 410 ’76 Dr. for a program by Norman Rozeff,  “Investigating a Family Mystery.” For more information visit the society’s Facebook page.

January 18 through March 15, 2020 – The Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, 2425 Boxwood St. will be hosting the “New Quilts From an Old Favorite 2019” exhibition featuring 21 works of art based on original quilts using the classic oak leaf and reel block patterns. The exhibition is organized by the National Quilt Museum, Paducah, KY with support from MODA Fabrics and Janome America, Inc. Gallery Talks are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 21 and February 21. January 19, 2020 – The Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Genealogical Society  will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum. The program, “Interpreting Your Ancestry DNA Results” will be presented by Gordon White. For more information call 956-345-4756.

Join the Rio Grande Valley Byliners at the Harlingen Public Library for the following events:

  • January 11, 2020:   1:30 p.m. – Valley Byliners Monthly Meeting
  • January 21, 2020:  6:00 – 7:30 p.m. – Valley Byliners Poetry Night
  • February 8, 2020:  Valley Byliners Annual Writing Workshop,
    “The Narrative in Place and Memory.”

The International Society of Family History Writers & Editors (ISFHWE) has announced the return of the “Excellence in Writing” competition. Entries will be accepted through March 15, 2020. For more information visit https://www.isfhwe.org/excellence-in-writing-competition/.

Harlingen is offering free walking tours of its historic downtown on Saturday mornings through March 28, 2020. These popular tours depart from J & B’s Café, 204 E. Jackson, at 9:00 a.m. and last approximately 90 minutes.  You should dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes, and be prepared to have fun! Even locals are amazed and entertained by what they learn!  The tours are free and open to the public weekly, except on the first Saturday of each month, which is Jackson Street Market Days.
