San Benito NJROTC cadets advance to state drill meet

SAN BENITO — After spending countless hours practicing in the summer and during the school year, these students’ dedication and hard work is showing winning results.

For the fourth year in a row, the San Benito CISD NJROTC unit has qualified for the NJROTC Area 10 State Drill Meet, which will be held in February in College Station.

On Dec. 6, the drill teams competed in the NJROTC SouthWest Drill meet in San Antonio.

There the teams placed second in the Armed Drill Exhibition and third in the Unarmed Drill Exhibition.

“We’re really happy about the cadets’ accomplishments,” said NJROTC Navel Science Instructor Timothy Wilson. “This is no easy task to complete, but the teams have shown their dedication and drive.”

According to Wilson, the cadets practice at least eight to 10 hours a week.

“When you look at how much they practice — it’s also an accomplishment because they have to manage their grades and other activities in addition to community service projects and also supporting school events,” Wilson said. “The cadets have worked very hard to get to this point.”

In April, the cadets will be competing against 16 teams for one of two spots to qualify for the National Drill Meet.

“The cadets are really proud that once again we get to represent San Benito,” Wilson said. “Hopefully, we move closer to those national spots and we continue to move up each year we go to the meet.”
