El Paseo Arts Foundation to host auditions for two plays

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Whether you’re interested in acting onstage or working behind the scenes, you may be just the person this organization is looking for.

The El Paseo Arts Foundation will hold auditions at the SPI Community Center for two play productions that will be performed in the fall — “Absence of a Cello” and “They’re Playing Our Song.”

In addition to cast members, directors are also looking for volunteers who are interested in working backstage, painting and building the set.

Auditions for “Absence of a Cello” will be held Friday, Aug. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This play is in need of three male cast members and four female cast members around 20 to 60 years old.

“Absence of a Cello” follows out-of-work physics professor Andrew Pilgrim, who must decide at what lengths he will go to in order to land a big corporate job.

In preparation for the arrival of interviewer Otis Clifton, Andrew and his family attempt to adjust everything that might reveal who they really are.

Carol Kent, the director for “Absence of a Cello,” recommends people have a good time while they audition and to not let their nerves get the best of them.

“Just be you,” she advised. “The best thing to do is relax and go with the flow.”

The comedic play will be performed Oct. 8 and Oct. 9 at the SPI Convention Centre.

According to Kent, rehearsals generally last a month prior to performances.

“That can require, depending on your role, anywhere from two rehearsals a week to five rehearsals a week,” she explained. “The bigger the role, the more lines you have and the more time you’re going to need in rehearsal.”

Auditions for “They’re Playing Our Song” will be held Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 to 11:45 a.m.

This play is in need of four male cast members and four female cast members ages 20 and older.

Those auditioning for “They’re Playing Our Song” need to prepare a song to sing during the audition.

“They’re Playing Our Song” follows Vernon, a wisecracking, successful composer who comes across a slightly disorganized, off-beat accomplished lyricist named Sonia.

The musical comedy is centered on the joy of falling in love, the ups and downs of new romance and the joy of making art.

The musical will be performed Nov. 5 and Nov. 6 at the SPI Convention Centre.

Anyone who wants to audition, but cannot make the scheduled audition times, can contact a director to schedule a different time.
