We’re still sweltering with all the heat and humidity, but there are some events and activities you might want to explore and enjoy in Harlingen and the surrounding area.
The Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum, 2425 Boxwood Street, has three exhibits currently on display that are well worth a visit: An art exhibit by Alexander Comminos, “On Down the Line,” a “Mosaic Art Exhibit” by Marco Martinez and “Discovering Fort Brown,” a traveling museum exhibit created by the CHAPS program at UTRGV that showcases all historical eras of Fort Brown history.
On Thursday, August 15, 2019, 6-8 p.m., the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum invites the public to a reception for at 6 p.m. for “Mystery at the Museum — The Unveiling of the Pineda Stone — A Celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Pineda Stone.” For more information about the exhibits, upcoming receptions and events, museum hours or to schedule a group tour call 956-216-4901.
The Rio Grande Valley Byliners, a writers group open to anyone interested in writing and publishing, will meet in the Harlingen Public Library, 410 ‘76 Drive on Saturday, August 10 at 1:30 p.m. The speaker will be Gianna Hesterberg, an author, vlogger, and teacher. The Cameron County Historical Commission will hold its regular meeting on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, 7200 Paredes Line Rd., Brownsville, TX. The event is free and the public is invited. For more information call 956-345-4756.
Thursday, August 15, 2019, 10:15 a.m., The Tip O’ Texas Genealogical Society will meet at the Harlingen Public Library, 410 ‘76 Dr. to air a video from Rootstech 2019, “The Silent Language of the Stones, Reading Gravestones through Symbols and Carvings,” by Joy Neighbors. The RGV Byliners and the Harlingen Public Library invite you invited to an evening of poetry reading and sharing at the Harlingen Public Library on Tuesday, August 20, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Poems must be family-friendly and poets of all ages are welcome! On Sunday, August 18, 2019, 1:30 p.m., the Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Genealogical Society will hold its regular meeting at the Harlingen Arts & Heritage Museum. 2425 Boxwood St. The speaker will be Al Guillen who will present “A Son’s Story.” The meeting is free and open to the public.
The Harlingen Public Library, one of my favorite places, is always a hub of activity. Besides fulfilling its traditional role of maintaining a lending library, there is so much more to discover at the library. They have classes and activities for Children, Teens, and Adults, a Harlingen Archive Room, lots of computers and more.
