Friends of Animal Rescue seeking barn cat adopters

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — If you have time to spare or are looking to welcome a furry friend to your home, you’re exactly who this local animal shelter is looking for.

The Friends of Animal Rescue shelter on the Island has 10 to 12 healthy, semi-feral cats in need of an outdoor home.

According to personnel, these types of cats make ideal residents for farms, horse stables, barns and other suitable locations with outdoor shelter options.

Jacky Conrad, Friends of Animal Rescue President and Co-Founder, describes these cats as being more independent and less social than domestic cats.

“We currently have some barn cats that have worked real well at their new home,” Conrad said. “But we always have more cats coming in and those farms are filled so we need more.”

Adopters are responsible for providing daily food and water, shelter from the elements and long-term veterinary care.

These semi-feral cats are free and do not have an adoption fee.

Each cat has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and ear-tipped.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) testing is available upon request and at the adopter’s cost.

Love kittens?

Friends of Animal Rescue personnel are in need of volunteers to help socialize about 10 to 20 kittens that are getting ready for adoption.

“These kittens are under 2 months old and this is the prime time to socialize them,” Conrad said. “So, we’re looking for individuals that want to visit and hold the kittens.”

Those interested in volunteering can stop by the shelter every day, anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
