HARLINGEN — A national fight against child poverty will be joined by Harlingen residents. A 5K run to celebrate Red Nose Day will be held Saturday, May 18, at McKelvey Park at 1325 S. 77 Sunshine Strip.
That’s a campaign with the mission to end child poverty by funding programs that keep children safe, healthy and educated.
The national program debuted in 2015 and has raised nearly $150 million and impacted more than 16 million children in America, and around the world.
The organization partnered with Walgreens in 2015 and with that partnership they organize a fundraiser each year.
Partner charities for the 5K include Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Children’s Health Fund, Covenant House, Feeding America, the Vaccine Alliance, UnidosUS, and The Global Fund.
Serafin Padron, store manager at the participating Harlingen Walgreens, said this is the first time they will be part of a run to fundraise.
“We have teamed up to have a one-mile run this year and the 5K, a bounce house for the kids and other goodies provided by vendors,” Padron said.
“We wanted to get the community physically involved, which is why we decided to use the run as the fundraiser.”
Another way to donate can be by buying a red nose with emoji characters on them at the nearest Walgreens for $2 each.
A challenge has been announced to collect all five different red noses and take a selfie. You can participate in the Hero Five High challenge to be featured on Red Nose Day programming on NBC, May 23. “We want to encourage people to come and be educated on what this day is. When we are united together, community and businesses, we can help children in need.”
