TSTC programs recognized by governor’s council

HARLINGEN — Five technical programs at Texas State Technical College, including one at the Harlingen campus, were recently recognized by the Office of the Governor’s Texas Workforce Investment Council at a ceremony in Austin.

The Wind Energy Technology program in Harlingen was among five TSTC programs recognized for providing skills standards and meeting the needs of state employers in creating a competitive workforce, according to TWIC.

All programs offer associate’s degrees of applied science.

“Being recognized by the TWIC is the culmination of hard work and dedication of the program leads and instructors,” Tony Abad, member of TSTC’s Board of Regents, stated in a press release. “The best part is that the students are the real winners.”

The other TSTC programs recognized were Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electrical Lineworker Technology, Process Operations and Solar Energy Technology.

Mark Plough, TSTC’s statewide department chair for Biomedical Equipment Technology for the Harlingen and Waco campuses, stated in a press release the campuses were able to include the skills standards in the curriculum because the college has the equipment and instructors with field experience.

“The students are more motivated,” he stated in the release. “We are able to place our graduates. Our program is recognized as one of the top programs in the country for two-year technical and community college-type programs.”

TWIC promotes the development of a highly-skilled, well-educated workforce to meet the needs of Texas businesses of all sizes.

According to TWIC, only 23 Texas colleges offer programs with the industry-defined skills standards designation.
