Southwest Key Programs is in discussions with the Brownsville Independent School District and Promesa Public Schools to provide enhanced educational services at its shelters in Brownsville, the company confirmed.

Salvador Cavazos, Southwest Key vice president for educational services, said Promesa Public Schools approached SWK about providing the services at one of the company’s shelters in Brownsville. Promesa is opening a new charter school on Alton Gloor Boulevard in the fall.

Cavazos said he then reached out to BISD Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas about BISD providing similar services at the company’s shelters.

Cavazos noted that Promesa’s charter with the Texas Education Agency authorizes the district to provide educational services throughout Cameron County. Southwest Key has several shelters in other parts of the county besides Brownsville.
