SAN BENITO — The city is laying the groundwork for a splash pad, soccer field, hiking trail and exercise stations at its newest park.
Last week, city commissioners approved a contract with the Heffner Design Team to design the network of power lines connecting the splash pad and exercise stations to lighting for the soccer field and hiking trail.
A $314,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will help fund the project. “We’re excited about it,” Art Garza, the city’s parks director, said yesterday. “These are items we’ve been trying hard to get. The City Commission has been trying to get these services for our citizens.”
Garza said he will meet with the Heffner firm to determine a construction timetable. In April, the city rejected the project’s construction bids after the low bidder’s proposal ran $127,457 over the project’s $545,542 budget.
As a result, it became unclear if the city would meet its original completion date set for the end of the year.
